Q: What are Masters Games?
A: Masters Games are multi sports festivals, offering mature aged participants the opportunity to participate in a number of sports in the one event. Not only are there a wide variety of sports for participants to choose from, but they may elect to compete in more than one sport in the same Masters Games.
Q: Who is the overall coordinator of the Fremantle Masters Games?
A: The City of Fremantle has taken the initiative and is hopeful the Games will receive the necessary support from a variety of sports. The City of Fremantle has in the past been responsible for organising the successful Fremantle Wall of Fame inductions.
Q: Who can be involved as an organiser of a particular sport?
A: The Organising Committee has approached local clubs, state sports bodies and some commercial providers. Local clubs from the same sport showing an interest in being part of the games will be encouraged to work together, sharing venues and expertise. If local clubs show an interest in being part of the games then they will be expected to work with their state sport bodies.
Q Is there any other criteria controlling involvement from a sport?
A: Yes there will be, but some details are not available yet. Those things that may apply and are being considered include:
- A desire on behalf of the sport to genuinely want to be part of the Games.
- Administrative capability and suitable personnel to run the Games.
- Venue(s) in sufficient quantity and the required quality to stage the event.
- Capacity to attract a set number of participants, or enough participants to provide a viable competition.
- The legal status of the sporting organisation (ie incorporated, company or some other legally recognised structure).
- A core of participants willing to pay the fee.
Q: Can my organisation raise sponsorship to assist with the costs?
A: Yes, but this would need to be approved by the Organising Committee. The Games will have sponsors so there will be a desire to avoid conflicts and misunderstandings.
Q: What about insurance?
A: The sporting body will be responsible for all insurance requirements including:
- medical insurance of participants
- public liability insurance
- insurance protection for borrowed/hired equipment
- insurance cover for cash on venues/premises
Q: Are there special entry conditions?
A: Masters Games should incorporate Open Entry. There should be no restrictions on entry, no selection processes, no qualifying times or any other method of determining participation, other than the desire to participate and having reached the minimum age for the sport(s) in which they wish to participate.
Within some sports, such as weightlifting, the participant needs a level of expertise, to reduce the risk of injury.
Presenting sports competitions in age groups is an essential element of the Masters Games and should be part of all sports in all Masters Games unless there are exceptional circumstances. The opportunity to compete with and against their age peers distinguishes Masters Sport and Masters Games for the participants.
Q: What rules or regulations apply
A: Sports in Masters Games should be conducted under the rules of the relevant National Sporting Association. Where special rules and procedures have been developed to facilitate mature aged participation in a particular sport, these rules should be used.
Q: Can entry fees be charged?
A: Yes, there will be a registration fee and a sports fee. The registration fee is a one-off fee for entering the Games and goes to the Organising Committee. The fee is used to pay for the medals, entertainment, opening ceremony, etc. The Organising Committee has not yet decided the amount.
The sports fee is set by the organisers of the sport and goes to them. The fee will be set, based on costs for running the competition and includes such things as hire of equipment, wages, venue hire, etc. Participants pay a fee for each sport they register for.
All fees will include GST.
Q: Who collects the fees?
A: The City of Fremantle will collect both the nomination and the sports fees. Sports fees will be passed onto the sports in their entirety subject to any GST implications.
Q: How is GST being handled?
A: All moneys collected will be inclusive of GST. The Organising Committee is awaiting further advice on how the City of Fremantle will handle GST and the implication this may have for the individual sports.
