It is with the utmost pleasure that I welcome you to the City of Fremantle and the 2009 Fremantle Masters Games.

A multi-sport festival held every two years; the Fremantle Masters Games are designed to give mature-age sportsmen and women a chance to be physically active. Participants are encouraged to select a sport of choice and challenge themselves by competing with peers of the same age.

Statistics show there has been a substantial increase in Masters Gamers’ participants in the past 15 years, which has been attributed to an ageing population. This has highlighted the need for events encouraging mature-age members of the community to continue to be physically active and competitive.

It’s a wonderful biennial event that embraces the spirit and vitality of mature-aged participants, as they compete with others the same age in a wide variety of sports.
Sport provides valuable opportunities for people of all ages to improve themselves, display teamwork and become engaged in community activities.

The Fremantle Masters Games are a fantastic incentive for people to renew, maintain or start sporting activities, while socialising at the same time. The games contribute to the health and well-being of our community and the real success comes, not from winning, but from participating.

Sport and participation is important for helping to build character, whether young or old. When involved in sport, individual character comes out, as well as determination and the ability to be part of a team.

Fremantle is a unique, stimulating and colourful place, which has been enriched by a large multicultural community. We pride ourselves on being inclusive, not exclusive, which is what the Fremantle Masters Games is all about. From beaches to buskers, cappuccinos and culture and diggers to the Dockers, Fremantle remains the quintessential port city, harbouring a true soul – and I hope you get to experience these many facets while visiting our city. Let the games begin…
